QUOTE OF THE TERM
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
- Nelson Mandela

Our news
Here in the Home Rooms we've been working on developing the garden last half term. Liz and I ordered some lovely chunky furniture and students have been busy growing fruit, veg and flowers to add some colour, smells, tastes and textures. S did a wonderful job of repointing the wall and has started a pizza oven build.
This term we've set some more student challenges:
A has been growing sunflowers and measuring them. Which one do you think will be the tallest?
T is developing an area for wildlife and a sensory garden. We're visiting a garden centre this term to look for plants and seeds.
C will be building a raised bed from 6 planks. We've set him the challenge of finding the best way to build it. You can have a go at his challenge too. Download the instructions here.
Our mural project
We want your artwork and words of encouragement!
Claudia is transforming this rather dull wall in our garden into an Inspiration Station. Can you give it some love? Download the instructions here.
We're looking for a short phrase or a positive symbol (think happy faces, rainbows or 'Be the reason someone smiles today', etc).
To submit your work:
- Pop it on a postcard (148 x 105mm, A6 size)
- Give it to your tutor or mentor
- They'll take a picture of your work and email us your design
What would you like to see in the garden?
We want to make this a space that everyone can enjoy. What would you like to add? Maybe you could pop in and put your green fingers to use.
Your work
At 'head-honcho-central' we get to see the work you do with tutors and mentors everyday, whether you work with us in the home rooms, in your home or online. It's fabulous!
It's soooo fabulous that we fixed our minds to create a space where we could share it with the world! If you've got work or photos you'd like to add to our page please let your tutor or mentor know and they will pass it on to us.
Work is uploaded towards the end of each half term. You can add your initials or be anonymous - that's completely up to you!
Japanese & Manga Art
Here's some fantastic self-focused work from one of our remote students, B.
B has been teaching herself Japanese and drawing Manga art. Do you recognise any of the Japanese? What would you like to learn independently?
Creatures Everywhere
T made a photobook of her favourite moments from her visit to the zoo.
She has also been busy in the garden, installing a bird feeder. It's so popular we've had to refill it twice already! Can you spot T's great design for a birdbath too?
The Advice Corner
(well OK, it's not a corner, but it IS a good place for advice). We all have worries some of the time. Our team has got together the places we think are great sources of advice for children and teens. Of course, we are always ready to listen at Next Steps too.
Your tutor or mentor can help
The websites we recommend can help but don't forget that your tutor or mentor can help too. Sometimes talking in person to someone who knows you can be the best way to share a problem.
Remember:
- We're here for more than maths, English, science
- A problem shared is a problem halved
- We have lots more ways to support you - too many to add them all here!
