FAQ

Yes, we follow the same robust Safer Recruitment procedures that you'll find in any mainstream school setting. Tutors have QTS, DBS, Qualification and social media checks and DfE checks.

We're very adaptable! Tutors work in students' home settings, community settings (such as libraries), school SEND provision spaces and in our dedicated Home Rooms tuition centre in Bideford.

We do request that there is a second adult with our tutors when tuition takes place in a home. This safeguards both the student and the adult. The second adult doesn't have to be directly with the student but does have to have within hearing range.

In community venues where there are other people around we do not require a second adult (although for anxious students, they are very welcome to stay).

Just complete the referral form and send through any relevant info. We also ask that you confirm you've spoken with parents for their permission to share information with us and work with us.

We take everything else  from there;  we create a relational plan following a parent conversation, arrange sessions and locations.

We'll be in touch to let you know what's been arranged. We'll send you a lesson report after every session and attend review meetings (every 6 weeks) to keep you informed.

Every piece of information you give us helps us to build a thorough picture of your student and hit the ground running.

It's not an exhaustive list, but it's useful to see NC levels and targets, EHCP, IEP, IBP, My Plan, information on safeguarding, CIN, LAC status and the names and contact details of any other key professionals working with your student.

We send lesson reports after every session to the named professional and any other requested members of your team. We also attend 6 weekly review meetings to keep you updated on progress.

Case Studies

Student A

Student A joined us part way through Year 10 via a school referral as SEN K. They had not been attending school for around 18 months because of anxiety. Initially, Student A received 4 hours of support (two of Mentoring, one of English Literature, one of maths). In January 25, 5 months before GCSEs, the school added two extra hours of tuition for English Language at the parents' request. In collaboration with his school, Next Steps enabled Student A to sit their GCSEs in a quiet space with a familiar face as an invigilator. Student A has now moved to a sixth form college where they are undertaking a  Level 2 course having gained all three GCSEs (Grades 5, 5, 8).

Student B

Student B joined us in Year 8 after facing difficulties with friendship issues and mental health, supported on a Section 19 from the local authority. When they started with us, Student B was unable to leave their bedroom. Once our mentor had developed trust with Student B, they began meeting in the family room. From there, we started core subject tuition and our mentor built short walks outside. Working at Student B's pace, they began to access 1:1 sessions in our tutor rooms and then small groups. When the time was right, Student B enrolled in a new mainstream setting, supported through transition by their Next Steps mentor. Student B has just started Year 10, has chosen options and is excited to pursue their dream of becoming a vet.

Student B's successful reintegration is a true celebration of what a local authority, school, family, student and Next Steps can achieve together.

Student C

Student C was referred direct from their school as their attendance had dropped and they were at risk of exclusion for disruptive behaviour.

Student C was supported with two hours of tuition (Maths and English) after school each week in a local community setting for two terms. Student C's school subject teachers have all remarked on their increased engagement, change in attitude to learning, growth in subject knowledge and confidence and their attendance is back on track. Their referral has been deemed such a success that tuition is continuing into Year 10 with a focus on grade improvement.

Student D

Student D was referred to us to support his understanding of science as a second language student and Looked After Child.

Prior to working with Next Steps, Student D had received 18 months of EAL support and developed good conversational skills and written English. Student D continued to struggle with the technical language of science.

The school referred Student D to us, asking for support with two hours of weekly online science tuition, accessed in school within school hours. Student D sat GCSEs in May/ June 25 and passed all core subject exams, including science.

Testimonial

The Park School

Testimonial for The Park Community School’s Collaboration with Next Steps Education

We at The Park Community School have had the privilege of working closely with Liz and Sarah, the founders of Next Steps Education, over the past year. Their support has made a significant and positive impact on our students, particularly those requiring additional assistance with GCSE preparation, academic mentoring, SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) intervention, and reintegration into school.

Next Steps Education has consistently exceeded expectations in every aspect of our partnership.

Communication has been one of the standout strengths of Next Steps Education. Liz and Sarah have always maintained open, clear, and timely communication with both our staff and students. This ensured a smooth process from the initial consultation to the delivery of tailored tutoring sessions, making it easy to keep track of progress and adjust plans as necessary.

The organisation and structure provided by Next Steps Education have been impeccable. Liz and Sarah carefully coordinated schedules to meet the needs of each student, whether for in-person or online tutoring. The flexibility of this approach allowed students to receive support in a way that worked best for their individual needs, reducing any barriers to participation.

The community links that Next Steps Education has forged are another major benefit to our students. By being involved in our school’s wider community, they helped foster a strong sense of belonging and support, which was particularly beneficial for those students who were struggling with disengagement. This connection also encouraged students to see the value in their education, something that can be difficult for those who have faced challenges in the past.

One of the most notable features of Next Steps Education is the team of passionate and supportive QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) tutors and mentors. Liz and Sarah have carefully selected tutors who are not only experts in their fields but are also compassionate and understanding. The tutors work collaboratively with students, making lessons engaging and adaptive to each individual’s pace and learning style. This personalized attention has resulted in improved academic outcomes and greater confidence in students.

Over the course of our partnership, Next Steps Education has supported more than 20 of our students, offering 1:1 in-person and online tuition. This support has played a crucial role in helping students prepare for their GCSEs, as well as in providing the necessary emotional and educational mentoring for those who needed additional SEMH intervention. Many of our students, particularly those reintegrating into school after a period of absence, have benefitted from the patient, nurturing approach provided by the Next Steps team.

Through their support, our students have not only improved academically but have also gained the skills and confidence needed to engage positively in school and beyond. Liz and Sarah’s dedication to each student’s success has made a remarkable difference, and we are incredibly grateful for their contribution.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Next Steps Education and highly recommend their services to any school or student in need of specialised, compassionate, and expert academic support.

Communicating to Schools

Post-session Reporting

Our partnership approach means you'll always be kept in the loop with your students' progress with us. Post-session reports are sent to commissioning clients, named key professionals and parents/ guardians. We've included data in reports to support your records and decision making, such as Readiness to Reintegrate, Level of Engagement and a formative assessment of level. We support your live attendance tracking through dedicated student Teams channels and follow up any safeguarding concerns we may have with your DSL.
